Let’s be honest—sometimes we just need a low-prep activity that’s still meaningful, fun, and keeps students engaged without draining our energy or requiring a stack of materials. That’s where my latest classroom favorite comes in: Pass the Prompt – a collaborative writing game that brings creativity, laughter, and teamwork into your ELA block!

Whether you’re wrapping up a unit, planning for a sub, or just need a fun Friday activity, this game is a perfect go-to. I designed it to be as easy as possible for teachers while still delivering big on engagement.

What Is Pass the Prompt?

It’s a simple concept with big results: students take turns writing parts of a story based on a shared prompt, “passing” the page to the next writer. Each student adds a twist, a sentence, or a few lines—and the results are often hilarious, unexpected, and downright magical.

It’s storytelling meets teamwork, and the best part? It’s virtually no-prep.

What’s Included in the Resource?

I’ve bundled everything you need in one neat package so you can print and go:

  • A clear, easy-to-follow teacher instruction guide
  • 10 imaginative and funny writing prompts
  • A group writing sheet (fits up to 6 writers per story!)
  • A student reflection sheet for thoughtful wrap-up or discussion

Whether you’re working with small groups or running it as a whole-class activity, this game adapts easily to your needs. And it’s great for grades 4–10!

Why You’ll Love Using It

  • Low prep: Just print and go—or display the prompts digitally!
  • Versatile: Use it during early finisher time, creative writing units, sub days, or even as a back-to-school or end-of-year activity.
  • Fun + academic: Students are working on writing, sentence structure, reading comprehension, and creativity—without even realizing it.
  • Classroom community building: Students love reading the final stories out loud and seeing how their contributions shaped the final result.

Teacher Tip:

Use a timer for each writing round (2–3 minutes) to keep the energy high and the pacing just right. You can also assign a genre (like mystery or sci-fi) to challenge your students even more!
